Apply for Davis School for Independent Study
2025-2026 Application
2025-2026 Class & Workshop Schedule
STEP 1: Review information for elementary (grades K-6), middle school (grades 7-8) and high school (grades 9-12).
STEP 2: Parent/guardian must complete the DSIS application linked above if interested in enrolling their student at DSIS. Even if you are not sure that you want to enroll your student at the Davis School for Independent Study (DSIS), completing the application puts your student’s name on our list which is important because we have waitlists at certain grade levels. Please be sure to read the application requirements carefully and attach the required documents. Residency documents are still required even if your student has been attending another DJUSD school. We will not be able to move forward with enrollment unless the application submitted to us is complete. Contact Diane Rubin at [email protected] if you have questions.
STEP 3: Non-Davis Residents only- Parent/guardian must request an inter-district transfer (IDT) from your district of residence. If you already have an IDT to a school in Davis, you will need to request a new one listing Davis School for Independent Study as the school you are requesting and the reason for the request should be “Independent Study”. Employment in Davis cannot be the reason listed on an IDT to DSIS.
STEP 4: Non-DJUSD Students only- Parent/guardian must complete the district enrollment process. Contact Korlyn Gibson at [email protected] with questions.
STEP 5: 7-12th Grade Students only- Our counselor will email the student a questionnaire and the student will respond via email.
STEP 6: A parent/guardian and the student (7-12th grade) attend an information session with the DSIS principal at 4 pm on Monday afternoon. The information session is held at 526 B Street in Davis.
STEP 7: Our counselor will send the Written Agreement to the first parent/guardian. The parent/guardian signs electronically and forwards the agreement to the student’s email for the student signature.
Step 8: K-9th Grade DJUSD Students only- Parent/guardian must submit an Intradistrict Transfer request to the enrollment specialist, Korlyn Gibson at [email protected]t. The request form is available on the DJUSD website or via this link: 25-26 Intradistrict Transfer Request Form. Deadline for intradistrict transfer requests: Tuesdays at 12 noon. DSIS enrolls new students on the dates listed in step 11. Transfer requests received after Tuesday at 12 noon will experience a minimum of a 1 week delay in enrollment.
Step 9: 10-12th Grade DJUSD Students only: Contact the counseling office of the current school of enrollment to complete their disenrollment process. Please note that DSIS cannot enroll your student until this step has been completed.
Step 10: 7-12th Grade Students only- Our counselor will schedule a meeting with the parent/guardian and student to finalize the student's schedule.
Step 11: Your student should continue attending their current school until you receive a Welcome Letter from DSIS via email confirming the DSIS start date and providing details about your student’s first day of school and student orientation.
DSIS enrolls new students on the first day of each semester (8/25/25 and 1/6/26). DSIS also enrolls new students on the following Fridays throughout the school year: 8/29, 9/12, 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/24, 10/31, 11/7, 11/21 (K-8 only), 12/5 (K-6 only), 1/9 (K-6 and 10-12 only), 1/23, 1/30, 2/13, 2/27, 3/13, 3/20, 4/10, 4/17, 5/1, 5/8 (K-8 only), 5/15 (K-8 only)
NOTE: Students currently on an IEP, must have an IEP meeting which will be scheduled at the current school site. The IEP team will make an individualized determination as to whether the pupil can receive a free appropriate public education in an independent study placement.
(Optional) Before signing a written agreement the parent or guardian of a pupil may request a telephone, videoconference, or in-person pupil-parent-educator conference or other school meeting during which the pupil, parent or guardian, and, if requested by the pupil or parent, an education advocate, may ask questions about the educational options, including which curriculum offerings and nonacademic supports will be available to the pupil in independent study, before making the decision about enrollment or disenrollment in the various options for learning.
